![]() I just look at the Outside van site and look this jaw dropping offering: Neither one of these companies matched my wishes so did my own but Van Specialties folks were very nice especially the owner. I learned from Van Specialties then that they were often converting vans for them so I just assume that their qualities were similar. In Nov/Dec of 2012 I contacted Outside Vans twice but did not get a call back, perhaps what I wanted did not meet their offering but a call back would be nice. In other words, once you've considered using OSV, it looks only marginally more expensive to get the Configurable option over the Core option, so why not go for it? It's a great sales tactic. It makes me think that the Core price is there as an Anchor, to set your expectations for the other builds. ![]() Luckily, I enjoy messing with the van.Īlso, look at the price differential between the Core and the Configurable conversions. If I was charging my van-time at my billable rate, I'd have spent way more than OSV's Custom conversion costs. Time spent working on the van is time you can't be off doing the things you'll want to use the van for. Time to research options (they give you choices from a limited, known-good set of components), time to plan out the build, time to order all the components you need, time to go to the local hardware store on multiple occasions when you find you didn't order all the components you need, time to sit back and wonder how you're going to make it work when it doesn't all go to plan, and all of this around probably a full time job too. My entire conversion cost way less than the OSV core price of $39k+, and I'd like to think my standards are in the same ballpark as theirs. Interesting that nobody with an OSV build has actually commented on this thread yet. I don't plan on using a mattress or cushion, cant justify losing more cargo space. So you will have more cargo space, but lose height space under a single panel, which the other panels are stacked on. The bed panels stack vertically on top of each other and get strapped down over the bed rails. much more than I wanted or planned, but the price I can swallow for what I want. This set up with aux batteries and two rooftop vents comes out to about 60k. I have a vw westfailia now and having the bench seats further back makes the space inside the slider door more usable. That will also allow a second row bench, or to move the first row bench back to the second row position. Sleeping will be done head to toe, flare to flare. I've decided to do flares to widen the bed and go with the 2 panel bed so the rails wont come up to the side window. No kitchen galley, but microwave overhead and the exoskeleton over head cabinets on both sides. I know they have a few bunk bed options thats fold up out of the way, but I'm having a little bit of a hard time figure out what is what there as well.Ĭlick to expand. So if you see the Quest van on their page, that's what I'm going for. I don't think I can make it work living on the west side of LA (let alone fitting in the parking spots at many camp sites. I know with a 170 it would all fit together really nice, but the van is just soooooo long. Do they fit vertically behind the wheel wells? And I don't really know how you are supposed to store the panels in the 144. I also don't really like how the frame for the panel bed sticks out in front of the window and the door opening. They said you could put the panel bed at 40" instead of 35" and that will clear the bench seat with no head rests, so I guess that works, but you do have to take one panel off the bed in the morning and there is a lot less overhead room in the bunk area. For camping, I want the extra room between the front seats and the bench.īut once you put the bench in the second row position, now it interferes with the panel bad. The ideal situation for me would be:ġ OEM bench seat with both mounting position - for motorcycles in the back, I need the bench all the way up front. ![]() I'm still a little torn on how to make it work. Awesome! What is the basic setup you're going for?
